The Ways Social Workers Engage with Youth through the Use of Social Media
Today, in the internet era, social workers and teachers have also resorted to social networking sites in order to get in touch with youths between the ages of 13 and 25. Social media offers an easy means of contacting and aiding those who are too scared to meet them face to face. Social workers may make widespread use of social media in an effort to create awareness, offer counseling, and offer emotional support to young people, where they are. A classic example is the case of Finnish physician *Laakari Atte*, who has emerged as a top online presence influencer, in this case, on social media like Instagram and TikTok.
Utilizing his profile, Atte fights addiction and drug abuse and provides informative content with the aim of educating young people on the risks of addiction and abuse. Atte's writing style is casual and uncomplicated, with the tendency to blend medical facts with real experience and humor in an attempt to make a youthful population hear him. His blog posts and videos not only inform but also challenge young adults to be smart, seek assistance, and discuss addiction and mental illness without hesitation. Social media sites like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube provide social workers with unique opportunities to interact with young adults in a presentation format to which they can relate easily. TikTok, for instance, allows social workers to upload short yet substantial videos that inform and engage, and the visual medium of Instagram makes it a perfect platform upon which to put resources, experience, and words of encouragement up in posts, stories, and live streams.
YouTube, on the other hand, is a good medium upon which to put more substantial works on which social workers can discuss more complex issues like mental health, drug addiction, and learning about life skills. For social professionals, several strategies may be employed in reaching out to their target market. To start with, creation of good, authentic content that is credible and pertinent is fundamental.
Youths are also bound to engage and stay with content that appears to be authentic, instead of too official or instructive. Experts can also utilize social media platforms like live streaming and Q&A to reach their audience face to face and in real time, thus making the interaction personal and in real time. Collaborations with influencers like Laakari Atte can also amplify the coverage since they already have an audience and are already believed by youths. By strategic application of social media, social workers and teachers can bridge the gap, ensure ease of access for youth, raise awareness, and promote positive behavior change. From personal story to professional data to interactive dialogue, social media is a powerful partner in continued efforts to improve the health of youth. To effectively deal with bullying, I would implement a program consisting of education, support, and action.
It would include interactive resources delivered in the form of videos, real-life scenarios, and student, parent, and teacher lessons to educate them on how to prevent and respond to bullying. It would also have anonymous reporting systems whereby the users would be allowed to anonymously report the incidents of bullying to their mentors or trusted members. It would encompass mentorship clubs and peer helper clubs whereby the victims of bullying would be convinced to consult advice and support. To promote kindness and empathy, gamification would be utilized by the platform in that it would be rewarding those who resolve disputes or assist others. The platform's features would be incorporated by schools and institutions into their own bullying prevention programs, thereby making it a community initiative. Lastly, the aim would be to end up with a platform where one can learn, receive assistance, and take action for bullying prevention.
